Hairspray is the story of a happy young woman named Tracy Turnblad, a wannabe dancer who wants to earn a place on a local television show called the Corny Collins Show. The programme is in reality based on a Baltimore-based TV show named the Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland.
Tracy is nameless in the dancing circle when she has an interview, in spite of this she is chosen for one of the performing parts and with long odds she becomes a dancing celebrity almost overnight. Tracy is happy with this newfound reputation, & she opts to use her new found fame to help make positive developments to the television program. The key motivation behind these positive improvements is to do with race. Tracy seeks to racially combine the TV show, and as anyone might guess, she is met with much conflict.
Hairspray moved to the West End in London in two thousand and seven, opening for previews at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October 11, before being revealed to the general public at its main opening on October 30, two thousand and seven. The theatre play has included some renowned actors — Michael Ball plays one of the lead roles as Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s very own mother, offering a persuasive interpretation in this testing female part, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop owner Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. The original cast in the West End also includes newcomer to the theatre scene, Leanne Jones, in the position of Tracy.
Hairspray the musical play has gained a range of upbeat comments from journalists & theatre enthusiasts alike. Jacqueline said: “I have been to see the show four times up to now & I will unquestionably be going back next week & a few more times also. I love the theatre show & wish they could stay on a great deal longer. Ben Ellis is brilliant as link & Leanne Jones as Tracey & Michael Ball, well they are all simply superb. The musical hairspray is by far my favourite, mainly because its upbeat and if you are feeling a bit low then it is certain to make you feel so happy. I give it a ten out of 10 – I love it congratulations everyone.
